Friday at Lincoln Center

Movie Musical Marathon

First was "Singing In The Rain", a crowd pleaser (why does every Gene Kelly movie have a fantasy dance sequence?)

Then LC hosted the "Grease" sing along, but the crowd wasn't big enough to make it work. Still a good movie (with some comicbook cameos in the title sequence). If the theater had been full, I think people would have been less shy about singing.

Next is Top Hat, and the theater is about two-thirds full. Guess Astaire is more popular than Travolta.

More later...

Pride Parade NYC 09

A few pics of the Pride Parade, near 14th and Fifth.

A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose...

[Q| Red roses get all the media attention, the symbolism... I mean, when you picture a rose, it's red.

Yet, there are many other varieties of roses, with as many hues as a rainbow.. Each with their own symbolism and traits. Yet each is a rose.

My point of view? Nothing special. Just on my way to watch a peaceful parade on Fifth Avenue. A parade with a lot of rainbow flags, in a city so diverse the headquarters of the United Nations is here.

The sun is shining, people are happy. Life is good.

Saturday At The Bijou, Part One

[Q| One of the side effects of working a day job is that my body clock wakes me up at Six AM every day, including weekends. So, today I stumbled outside, uncertain what to do today.

I did need to return some overdue library books (May 8th), and Lincoln Center was screening The Secret Policeman's Other Ball.

The fine cost me $41 ($0.25 a day per book) which was okay... I had kept a book out for two years, and max fine was $12. And it helps fund the NYPL.

Anyways, the Reade Theater box office didn't open until 12:30, so I sat in the shade and checked my email. Waiting with me were a few senior citizens. A little bit strange, considering the content: a multi-continental tour of rock music.

Two screenings to go... more later.

If This Is Wednesday...

Just a quick post to let my loyal fans know I'm on vacation, heading out to Capri today, taking lots of pictures, and trying to find some exceptional Italian fumetti. (Unfortunately, I discovered a great shop in Naples, but too late to visit. Salerno is nice in that it is somewhat remote, but no stores nearby, except the journali stands.)

Leisure

[Q|
Today, I'm lounging in Battery Park, the world's most valuable landfill. During my travels here, I used the bridge near Stuyvesant High School, and observed a tennis game being played.
I realized that the more upper class a sport is considered (tennis, golf, sailing, polo, formula one racing), the less physical activity involved. Of course, that does not mean that the hoi polloi (that's Greek for "the great unwashed) cannot also enjoy these sports. Nor that there aren't low effort sports for the masses (Bowling, for example). Perhaps the leisure activities which don't require money aren't considered sports (like watching television). Or there is little money to be made, so companies do not market the activity with special shoes, clothing, sponsorships, or paraphenalia.
