Forgotten TV Lyrics: Ironsides

While this is an instrumental, it's the uncut theme to Ironside, so I include it in the "Forgotten TV Lyrics" index.

Besides, it's Quincy Jones, one of the great soundtrack composers of the 20th Century!

If you're looking for a copy, it's available on the Smackwater Jack album!

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the music on the series:
The opening theme music was written by Quincy Jones and was the first synthesizer-based television theme song, though in 1971, Jones recorded a fuller four-minute band version for the album Smackwater Jack.[3][4] This recording was then edited and used for the opening credits of the fifth through eighth seasons (1971–75). (The entire album track can be heard in the fifth-season episode "Unreasonable Facsimile" as Ironside and team track a suspect on the streets of San Francisco.) In addition to the opening theme music, Quincy Jones composed the entire score for the first eight episodes. Oliver Nelson took over those duties up to the end of the winter to spring 1972 episodes. Nelson was then replaced by Marty Paich for all the episodes from the beginning of the fall of that year up until the last episode that was produced in the spring of 1974. The song "Even When you Cry" with music by Quincy Jones and lyrics by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman was performed by James Farentino in the episode 'Something for Nothing' while Marcia Strassman had already sung it off-screen in the earlier episode 'The Man Who Believed' both during season 1.
I wonder if that Season One score has been released?

Forgotten TV Lyrics: The Bill Cosby Show: Hicky Burr

"Hicky Burr", the theme to The Bill Cosby Show, words by Bill Cosby, music by Quincy Jones, with vocalization by Bill Cosby.

Many people have forgotten that Quincy Jones wrote a lot of movie soundtracks, as well as many TV themes.  From Wikipedia:
In addition, he composed "The Streetbeater," which became familiar as the theme music for the television sitcom Sanford and Son, starring close friend Redd Foxx; he also composed the themes for other TV shows, including IronsideBanacekThe Bill Cosby Show, the opening episode of Roots, and the Goodson & Todman game show Now You See It.
(I'll get to those eventually...)

This series didn't last long... two seasons. I remember it being on cable, but it never kept my attention...it seemed strange in the way it presented the story.

You can find the song on Quincy Jones' record, Smackwater Jack, which also contains the theme to "Ironside", as well as "Theme from "The Anderson Tapes", a movie which is mostly forgotten, but which has an amazing cast, and a few historical footnotes attached!

Forgotten TV Lyrics: The Love Boat

The #forgottentvlyrics to The Love Boat!
The song was written by Charles Fox (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics). It became the theme music of the popular American television series The Love Boat, broadcast between 1977 and 1986. Jones's version was used as the opening tune for most of the seasons, only to be replaced by Dionne Warwick's cover in the last one.
(From the Wikipedia article.)

This is one of the rare TV themes available at karaoke bars. I like to sing it, as it has a nice disco beat, with a lounge lizard style. (Nothing against Mr. Jones, it's just the way I sing it.)

#ForgottenTVLyrics: An Explication

I've got a lot of eclectic musical tastes.
I love when marching bands cover popular music.
I can sing the aria to "What's Opera, Doc?"

...and...

I'm fascinated by television theme songs, especially those with lyrics, specifically those with lyrics which are rarely heard on television.

It started when "Cheers" went off the air.  One of the entertainment magazines featured the lyrics, which were never heard on air:
All those night when you've got no lights,

The check is in the mail;

And your little angel

Hung the cat up by it's tail;

And your third fiance didn't show;

[...]

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead;

The morning's looking bright;

And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn't even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

WOW!  Those were pretty cool!
Then I remembered that M*A*S*H had lyrics in the movie, which never aired on television because those lyrics were specific to a story in the movie.

Then, in 1997, there was an official history book for Star Trek, to celebrate the 30th (sigh) anniversary of the series.  Inside, was the original sheet music to the theme song, WITH LYRICS!  (Roddenberry, in a money-grubbing move, added lyrics so he could earn half the royalties on the theme.  Alexander Courage was not pleased.)

It slowly snowballed from there, as I picked up trivia from various sources and found sheet music collections.

Thanks to YouTube and other resources, it's now less difficult to find the original recordings (on vinyl!) online.

Thus, in 2013, I created a hashtag #forgottentvlyrics, and began posting to social media.  Twitter and Facebook didn't have good indexing, so I placed everything on Google Plus.  Since then, I've realized, why not transfer everything here, so I can at least make a few pennies.  (And who knows how much longer Google Plus will remain viable?)

The following is a list of what I've found so far. As I copy posts over to here, I'll include links in the titles.

One more note... I'm doing all this in 2015, but placing everything in 2012, which was empty of posts.  I don't want to clutter up my regular feed.
